Summary writing

LSC 1103 Summary Writing

A summary tells the important parts of a passage in much shorter form and in your own words. It is an important reading skill since if you can summarize a passage it shows that you have understood the main ideas. A good summary includes the main ideas and the main supporting points; while it also leaves out the minor details or repeated details; it does not include your own ideas or opinions, and it is much shorter (only 10%-20%) of the original passage.

When you write your summary for LSEC 1103 you should follow these steps:

  • Read the article through and decide what the main idea is
  • Read the article a second time and make notes of the points in each of the sections re: the main idea and supporting evidence. Ignore small details. Remember that you are NOT making a summary of each paragraph unless the paragraph contains relevant, or important details.
  • Type your summary and make sure you have written your own words and NOT copy and pasted (copied).
  • At the end, click on ‘Review’ then click on spelling and grammar. This will help to improve the quality of your English.
  • Make sure your summary has the right number of words.
